This, my friends, is the best music video I have ever seen. Not because it's BIGBANG (well, it doesn't hurt that's for sure), but because it truly is an amazing video from an artistic standpoint.
When you get past the initial they're in a desert with one random telephone pole and what seems to be remnants of cars and a bus from a bomb explosion, you realize that this is all in ONE SHOT.
ONE CONTINUOUS SHOT. NO STOPPING. NO SWITCHING BETWEEN CAMERAS. ONE SHOT.
Do you know how hard that is to accomplish? To have everything timed so perfectly, to have the entire thing choreographed so precise that one tiny mistake will mean doing everything over again? It is amazing and it makes me want to cry from sheer happiness that BIGBANG worked this hard to deliver this to their fans.
Even when they're standing in a v-formation at 1:12, it is pure amazing what GD does to keep the fluidity of everything.
And then as the camera starts to move to the right, you see GD start to spin.
And then BAM! As soon as T.O.P becomes the center of the camera shot, GD finishes his spin, altering the v-formation to follow the camera.
Do you see how genius this video is, guys? This honestly makes me want to cry from how brilliant and pure amazing this is.
I know a lot of people have been making fun of how they've been "spinning" so much lately, but you do realize that this is why they've been spinning so much? They've been trying to get the fluidity of it down because they've probably been rehearsing and choreographing this particular MV for quite some time. Kind of makes you feel a little silly now, doesn't it?
There are only two other things that I can compare this to. The first one being the dramatic version of "It's You" by Super Junior. They could have done away with incorporating the choreography into the video and strictly made the dramatic version the whole MV. The other one isn't even K-Pop. No, it's my favorite movie of all time, GoodFellas. If you have never seen this movie, I suggest you go rent it ASAP. Anyway, there is one scene with the steady cam shot that lasts over two minutes and you'll see just how timing is truly everything.
BIGBANG IF YOU'RE STALKING THIS BLOG, I LOVE YOU FOR DOING THIS! To me this proves that you don't have to have some batshit crazy plot where you give birth to a mannequin head covered in goop to have your music video considered "art." Less is more.
(Oh, but GD ... you could lose the one dangly earring. That would make this even more perfect).
Check out BIGBANG's new MV for "Love Song" and be amazed.

The video is flawless.
ReplyDeleteYou know, no matter how much I love Super Junior, I can't really deny just how innovative Big Bang is. This video-and song, really-are fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThere has to be at least 2 shots and I guess the transition is at 3.01 since there is no way Top, Daesung and Seungri could have moved from where they stand at 3.00 to where they come into the picture at 3.10 in 10 seconds flat. But that's just my guess and I truly agree, this video is awesome. Maybe they just ran as hell off camera. Haha it must have looked hilarious if that was the case. I'm awaiting the BTS footage. :D
ReplyDeletei agree with what Linnéa said^^^^
ReplyDeleteand to add to that the second shot is flipped or mirrored too (: you can tell by looking a GDs dangling earring. switches from the left to the right as well as Daesungs chain (:
this music video is amazing <3
now they're more than ready for the world tour!
ReplyDeleteThere is a mistake in the editing...in the begining at around 0:42, GD has his earing on his left ear. But later at 3:04, GD has his earing on his right ear. Just a samall mistake, but I couldn't help noticing.
ReplyDeleteAnyways I LOVE Bigbang, so it's no that big of a deal. <3 GD, TOP, TAEYANG, DAESUNG, and SEUNGRI. And of course <3 the Kpop Addict.
i had an issue with that dangly earring too!
ReplyDeleteYay you're back! :) I agree with your Love Song mv review. I read some comments saying they could've done it themselves, the mv's so simple etc, but if they listened to the song and read the lyrics it's supposed to be that way. Simple, and heartbreakingly sad. I thought that was the whole vibe the mv had. :)
ReplyDeletewow if you had not said that I would have not known it was done in one shot! Amazing how well the video turned out, it is truly art
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize it was in one shot LOL
ReplyDeleteI agree with Linnéa and crystallionaire. The video has 2 parts and the second parts is mirrored because GD's earring move to the right. So does his watch and bracelets, also TOP and Taeyang's broch.
ReplyDeleteIf it's really mirrored kudos to Big Bang 'cause the videos overall look like it take in one shot. And I like how everything look like in slow motion.
The MV is so simple, so beautiful and sad at the same time.
It's a great MV! The only thing that bothers me is GDs claw... what?
ReplyDeleteI love that it's in black and white. Sometimes that could be annoying, but it's so perfect it's like you don't even notice it.
Even if it's not just one shot (I'm sure it's at least two, but I won't rule out the possibility that they have super human speed) the editing is flawless and the flow never stops, it's beautiful.
Or maybe it is in one shot, and they just mirrored the camera to make it look like they were going just one direction, but they had to change directions so they didn't have to run to catch up... or something... I hope they will release a making film.
AND THE SONG! I cannot get enough! Best BB has done to date, I think! I love the feel of it, the emotion, the lyrics, everything!
And they let TOP sing(kinda) and dance! Hahaha I love the choreography, it's so subtle, but it's got to be so difficult!
<3
personally i like the safety pin earing though... but yes great video great song!
ReplyDeleteThis Video Is The Shit. soooo good. it totally made my day when it came out. although i definitely agree with what's been said above re mirroring and shot counts. it's not actually 1 complete shot. although even as two or three, it's still unbelievably impressive.
ReplyDelete(FILM NERD MOMENT: although if you're interested, fyi there's a film called "russian ark" that IS entirely 1 shot, and it's 99 minutes long. it's incredible to think about the orchestration of that - they do have people running around behind the camera to make the timing work.)
so the other tech thing is: i'm positive they've filmed this at a slightly faster speed - sped up the track and then danced/lipsynched to that, then slowed it back down to the actual track speed for the mv, which gives all their movements that amazing dreamy-smooth effect. so cool. such a simple technique to really add to the mood of the whole thing. and part of the reason big bang has my eternal love and devotion. <3
ALSO - GD's ridiculous grey/purple hair color atrociousness makes a lot more sense if the reason he did it was to have it shoot well in black and white? ??? maybe? i'd like to think he knows better than to give himself creepy faux-oldman hair. although i disagree with cindydindy, i LOVE the claw. GD just had to hide the bling somewhere.
also, yay! you're back, TKPA!
(sorry for the superlong comment)
it's still all one shot. i've watched it a thousand times, its just mirrored from around 3:00. its still one shot but they flipped the image. i'm not sure why but maybe to make the set look like its a different location.
ReplyDeleteit's actually mirrored from 3.00 onwards. And I'm pretty sure it's not in one shot, but it just seems like it. Technology nowadaysss.
ReplyDeleteBUT I LOVE THIS VID. AND GD LOOKED AS HOT AS HECK AND I DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE THE EARRING
yup.. its really aesthetic... every object, or what's left of it in the mv is also so full of symbolism.. from the signs to the bunny to the exploding car in the end...
